FLEET NEWS, 18-08-10 "Duty of care and driver training neglected by small fleets" |
DRIVER RISK ASSESSMENTS The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, also referred to as HASAW or HSW, is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in the UK. It states that "It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees." Legislation does not require businesses to eliminate all risk, but they are required to protect employees as far as "reasonably practicable". We can help you to achieve this legal obligation with a minimum of fuss. Risk assessments are careful examinations of what, in work, could cause harm to people, in order than you can then weigh up whether sufficient precautions have been taken to prevent harm. Such precautions include 'control measures', which can include driver training. Rather than suggest that driver training is a necessary control measure - as some of our competitors often do - we prefer to risk assess individual drivers, partly to determine whether or not they require training. After each risk assessment, we will provide you with a report that will help you meet your legal obligation to record the findings of the assessment. If an employee needs further training to be safe on the road, we will recommend a tailored course of cost effective defensive driving coaching, delivered from their normal place of work, wherever that may be.
